Athletic Handbook
2010—2011
Deuteronomy
11:18a: "Fix these words of mine in you hearts and minds."
| Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is truly a tremendous blessing that St. Paul’s and St.
John’s churches have provided our children a Christ-centered
environment for learning. Children
have the opportunity to learn of the perfect life, innocent suffering
and death, and resurrection of our Lord on a daily basis.
This wonderful Gospel truth permeates all regular school subjects
under the direction of our called workers.
This wonderful Gospel truth also permeates the
extracurricular activities of our school,
as we shine the light of Christ in the community.
This handbook has been published by the St. Paul’s Athletic
Committee and has been approved by the Board of Child Discipleship.
The purpose of this handbook is to express the school’s
philosophy, goals, and expectations of our student athletes, coaches,
and parents as we strive together to give God the glory in all things by
serving one another in love. The
St. Paul’s Athletic Committee encourages all parents to spend a few
moments and become acquainted with the information in this handbook.
We would like to thank you for your continued prayers
asking God to bless all our endeavors according to His good pleasure.
We would also like to thank you for your kindness in supporting
us in the policies and procedures set forth in this booklet.
They have been made in order that our programs run smoothly and
that our children may receive the greatest benefit of their
participation in these athletic programs.
To God be the glory!

The
Word of God is also the Word of Life and a Christian philosophy of life should
govern and pervade every aspect and dimension of our congregational programs
which certainly includes the athletic activities of our congregation.
We should strive to meet, not in theory, but in practice the following
goals:
A. Spiritual
1. To teach our athletes that talents and skills are God-given.
2. That all of life is worship and conduct and athletic
participation should be God pleasing.
3. To nurture a mutual Christian respect for personal and public
property.
4. To provide Christian discipline when there is a violation of
Christian conduct and philosophy whether it involves athletes, students, fans or
coaches.
B. Social-Emotional
1. To develop character traits such as self-discipline, self-esteem,
responsibility, leadership, team-work and self control under pressure, defeat,
and failure, as well as proper
acceptance of success and victory.
2. To provide the principles of sportsmanship, fair play, and team
support.
3.
To encourage participation under the competitive principle whenever
possible.
4.
To stimulate and encourage school spirit, pride, and enjoyment of the
sport but to also foster mutual respect for the pride and spirit of
others.
5. To teach a beneficial use of leisure time with a Christian atmosphere
and having fun.
C.
Physical
1. To develop to a greater degree the fundamental skills and a knowledge
of the rules appropriate to each grade level.
2. To help prepare our students for participation in advanced levels
athletics.
3. To provide to the best of our ability the training, safety, and
protection of our athletic participants.
4.
To provide quality participation time in practice as well as in games.
D. Evangelism
To provide a Christian witness to all
our members and to our community and to demonstrate by example the fruits of the
Christian faith in athletic competition.
“.
. . I chose you and appointed you to go and
bear fruit - fruit that will last.”
John 15:16 |

Section II
GENERAL GUIDELINES
This
handbook has been compiled to inform players and especially parents as to
how our athletic program is run and what is expected.
Before getting to each specific sport, a few general guidelines are
listed below.
A.
Athletes, coaches, and parents need to realize that attitude, work
ethic, individual gifts, practice time, and conduct are equally important when
considering fairness of playing time.
B.
7th & 8th teams players are to receive a fair amount of playing time
in the course of the season. 5th
and 6th teams players receive equal playing time in so far as
possible. A team may be split into two teams due to the number of
players on one team.
C. As an athlete you are a member of a team. You have displayed your desire to exercise and improve the
talents given by the Lord. As
a member of the team, you
have made a commitment of time and energy.
Athletes:
1. Dress in SpiritWear on the day of games.
2. If the game is on Saturday wear your SpiritWear the
Friday before and on Saturday.
D.
Gym shoes used for Phy. Ed. classes or athletics are to remain
exclusively for that purpose. They
are not to be worn elsewhere.
E.
School Master Locks are distributed for student use. Only school
Master Locks are to be used in the locker room.
If a lock is lost, a $5 fee will be assessed.
F.
The Board of Child Discipleship has approved a sports fee for each
activity. Each player is
required to pay the sports fee before practice begins.
G.
If players have late practice, they must leave the school grounds
after the school day and return no sooner than fifteen (15) minutes before
practice. Players are to
leave the school building within fifteen (15) minutes of the conclusion of
practice. If parents are
unable to pick up their child within fifteen minutes the child should
arrange to ride home with another student and be picked up there.
H.
Players should not use the telephone to arrange transportation
after practice or games. Transportation
arrangements should be made prior to the event.
I.
Parents/Guardians of players scheduled to drive are responsible for
transportation to away games. Coaches may car pool and will bring general
equipment.
J.
While Saturdays serve as basketball game days, there are no sports
practices conducted on Saturday or Sunday in any season, or Wednesdays
during Lent and Advent seasons.
No practices are scheduled over school vacations.
K.
To encourage responsibility, leadership, and teamwork, members of St.
Paul's athletic teams must make it a priority of attending their teams'
athletic event before any athletic activity outside of school. A
violation of this will be considered an unexcused absence.
L.
Every coach greatly appreciates having a good student manager. If any child wants to be part
of a team with less active participation he/she is encouraged to
consider being a student manager. Simply
make your desire known to the coach.
M.
Because our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and because our
students are underage for alcohol and tobacco use, those who use alcohol,
drugs ,or tobacco in an form and in any amounts are automatically removed
from the team.
N.
Finally, it should be kept in mind that participation on any
interscholastic team is a privilege. Consequently, that privilege
may be revoked for inappropriate conduct or an attitude deemed detrimental
to the team as a whole.

The following guidelines will be used to determine a student's
eligibility for sports and cheerleading:
A.
A student’s religion grade may be no lower than a C- .
B.
A student’s behavior grade must be Satisfactory or Excellent (S,O)
C.
The average of percentage grade subjects (Literature, English,
History, Math, and Science) will determine eligibility.
D.
A student’s combined grade average in these subjects may be no
lower that a C-.
E.
Grades in nonpercentage subjects (music, computers, art or other
subjects) will also be used to determine eligibility.
A student must have a Satisfactory or Excellent (S,O) grade.
F.
If a teacher feels a student's attitude needs evaluation, the matter
will be reviewed. An
"unfavorable" attitude will result in ineligibility.
G.
For the purpose of determining eligibility, "mid-terms"
will be a tool used to determine eligibility each quarter.
H.
A student who is ineligible will be permitted to practice and
suit up for the game but will not be allowed to play in the contest
following ineligibility. Students
are ineligible until evaluation demonstrates eligibility should be
reinstated.
I. Parents are urged to
contact the teacher at any time if there is a concern about a student's
eligibility.
As
an athlete, your first concern is to your classoom responsibilities.
Be the best student you can be!
Hold
a dime to the sun.
Sports is the dime.
Your education is the sun.

As an athlete you
are responsible to a team. Teams
cannot improve as a unit unless all athletes are present at every
practice. If you are unable
to attend practice, the athlete must notify the coach at least one day
before the absence (illness the exception).
Excused absences would include dentist and doctor appointments,
emergency situations, etc. Please
communicate with the coaches!!
If
a player receives one unexcused absence, they may become ineligible.
Ineligibility to be decided by coach and Athletic Director.
